Re-establishing an old Brooks tradition

Written by Mike Alanko from Canada 10/3/2009

Having employed the B15 Swallow Titanium on my 1963 Legnano Gran Premio for four years now, I can attest to the quality, durability and comfort, for rides long and short, fast or leisurely. For my anatomy, it is as perfect while wearing jeans as in "cycling shorts" - no chamois is required. Thank you!

Fantastic, simply fantastic! My first Brooks and most comfortable saddle ever.
Thanks for such a great product.

I've had my Brooks Ti B15 for a couple of years and could never seem to give it a chance to break in. After a couple of rides, I would always swap back to my light racing saddle. I stuck the B15 on the wall and forgot about it. Then I purchased a single speed and needed a saddle. My first ride was a muddy race in rain and it seemed to do the trick. Now its the most comportable saddle I have ever used. I'm going to order one for each bike!

A fabulous saddle! It looks great even on a racing bike and is more comfortable than any of the high tech modern saddles. Unbeatable!

I bought one of the best looking ever saddles, the Brooks Swallow Titanium Limited Edition 2007. Hard to describe how perfectly beautiful it is. It was also really confortable, like an old italian leather shoe adapting to your body day by day. So, it all seems to be perfect, right? not exactly...
After less than a year and something around 12000km of all weather road use, the saddle was absolutely worn out and useless (the tightening bolt thread all gone). How could this happen? wasn't this the legendary brooks saddle? the almost eternal soul?
I can't describe how disappointed I felt with such an expensive and beautifully made saddle absolutely passed by less than a year of use.
Then, I contacted Brooks to know why such a thing could happen. Their answer was not really encouraging: "The problem you have experienced with your Swallow is more due to the shape of the saddle than to the leather. Anyway we are aware of the fact that the Swallow deforms too quickly and are already working to make it stronger."
So It seems that the Swallow saddle was not really reliable for a long therm use.
Also, Brooks offered me a free Team Pro saddle as compensation, but I did not accepted it as I was not complaining to obtaining, I was asking for some answers, I was trying to understand why a legendary Brooks saddle was able to be so weak.
Till this point, I felt really disappointed and with all my Brooks trust lost in a forest of dull images.
But then, I had one of the brightest customers service answer I could imagine (Sadly, nowadays it seems the customers service is more a word than a fact). Brooks offered me to be part of the new Swallow testing process, in a true sign of interest in developing a better product, with many different steps involving it (better and stronger leather, imrpoved design, etc).
So, today, even If I still a bit disappointed about Brooks selling a saddle that's not able to cope with just some thousand km of all weather use, I've full trust in the brand as they're really taking care in developing their products and answering to all customers the best way they could.
I hope and have trust that the new Swallow will be able to reach a better design so to make this little jewell something more than just a pretty face.
