The first Challenge was designed and patented in 1896. This tool bag is for fitment to the rear of a saddle bearing bag loops. It features buckles that whilst fastening the bag to the saddle, are located within the hold itself, thus ensuring greater levels of security and the strap that secures the unit encircles the tools it carries, to prevent them from rattling during transit.

Re-establishing an old Brooks tradition

Written by cris filby from England 8/26/2009

Just received mine. Beautifully simple in design and very well constructed. This bag looks the business on the back of my Pashley Roadster Sovereign (fitted with Brooks B33 saddle)

Bought a Challenge Tool Bag as a twentieth birthday present for my Claud Butler, a bike I saved like mad for in my teens that should last my cycling life. The build quality and design of the tool bag make it well worth its price and it complements the bike beautifully. As it ages with the bike it will look even better.

Guys, can you just put on your website, that the Leather saddle bag on the back of my B17 Narrow is NOT a beautiful quality Clutch bag for my wife! Brilliant Saddle, Brilliant saddlebag, Brilliant company. That's my rant over, she may now get the message.

Of course these bags are expensive. Quality always is. You can always find someone who makes things cheaper. But sheer quality and beauty - gently improving as the item gets older - is still appreciated by the buyer long, long after the cost has been forgotten.

A> I have seen the bag used in this way, go for it!

It looks really really cool.. The catch is, it doesn't hold anything at all.. I need a spare tube, a Topeak tool kit which is fairly tiny, a compact pump, patch kit, a pair of tire lever.. Absolute minimum in case of a flat. I cannot do without any of them. Now, i can only fit at the max three at a time. The rest should go in my carry bag..
If you are my kind of a guy, look for something else.. If you prefer looks over functionality this is the tool bag without a doubt..I feel i totally wasted my money on this bag.

A>  Aside from your pump, which can also be attached to your frame, the challenge should be able to accommodate the other items you listed.  A small saddle pouch from any manufacturer will not be able to accommodate a pump.  Not only that, but the dimensions of the bag are clearly listed and should be considered before purchase.

COMMENT >>> I Have used Brooks saddles for over 40 years. The Glenbrook is an excellent piece of equipment, and will fulfill it's function admirably. I do feel however extremely disappointed. Given the Brooks 'heritage', one would have expected this item to have been manufactured in the UK, as are the saddles and other leather goods - this is what Brooks would have you believe. Imagine my disappointment when I read the 'Made in China' label on the display card.

REPLY >>> Brooks Saddle Bags and Holdalls are original designs of the early 1900's and of the 1950's and have not been produced by the company for many decades. Therefore we have not the skills and machinery to produce them in house. Brooks are doing their best to keep production in the UK and in Europe, but some products are nowadays hardly manufactured in the old continent with the quality standards required to be Brooks products. We still make all our saddles in England and many other products in Europe. Regarding our bags, yes, some are made in China. After trying to start production in the UK and Italy we realized that the quality was not good enough for Brooks, therefore we moved manufacturing to China. It is hard to imagine for most people, but China is delivering the highest quality stitching nowadays. We didn’t choose our supplier purely for cost reasons, but for the quality it can deliver.

We believe that in a world which is highly connected, predjudices should fall. You should see our supplier’s factory in China before expressing negative comments on the sourcing. Last, but not least, could you please check where the computer you are using is manufactured? Ours are Mac and they claim “designed by Apple in California. Assembled in China”. We bought them anyway. We trust that Apple is not having their computers assembled using children labour or in disrespect of other human rights... To conclude, we are still looking for alternative suppliers in the UK, but so far we have not found one. We hope you can change your mind, otherwise we accept that people have different opinions.

COMMENT > I've had a challenge tool bag fittes to a Brooks Swallow saddle for about 8 month. Already the straps are wearing through where they pass through the saddle loops. Very disappointing, any advice or tips - the straps don't have long to go and frankly I expected a bit better from Brooks.
